Bayern frustrated by persistent Bundesliga rivals

BERLIN (AP) -Despite spending freely on new players last year, Bayern Munich has found itself caught up in the closest Bundesliga race in 20 years.

Four teams are separated by only one point for the first time after 18 games since 1991-92. Bayern leads defending champion Borussia Dortmund and in-form Schalke on goal difference, while Borussia Moenchengladbach is a point behind.

"You could put four dice with the respective club logos in a cup, shake, and whoever comes out first will be German champions," said Udo Lattek, the former Bayern, Moenchengladbach and Barcelona coach.

After losing to Moenchengladbach 3-1 last weekend, Bayern is hoping to get back on track when it hosts Wolfsburg on Saturday.

Wolfsburg has been the only side to rival Bayern's spending this season, paying out a reported ?27.2 million ($35.4 million) for eight players in January to make up for a disappointing first half to the season.

"You could see their potential," Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath said about his new players after a 1-0 win over Cologne last week.

Also Saturday, Dortmund hosts Hoffenheim and Schalke visits Cologne, while Moenchengladbach travels to Stuttgart on Sunday.

Bayern lost its opening game of the season 1-0 to Moenchengladbach and responded by winning its next 10 games in all competitions, scoring 28 goals and conceding none.

"There was a real song and dance (after the first loss to Moenchengladbach) and it'll happen again this time," director of sports Christian Nerlinger said. "Once we're out on the field, we'll give the same answer as last summer."

Jerome Boateng is likely to start in central defense for Bayern after Daniel van Buyten broke a metatarsal in the loss to Moenchengladbach. The Belgian defender will be out for two months.

"We have enough quality in defense," said Boateng, who has mostly featured at right back. "I'm always delighted when I get to play in the center. Every player has a favored position, and mine's center back."

Boateng knows that Bayern will have to quickly recover its early season form to keep its rivals at bay.

"As we saw back then, we're capable of playing better football than now," Boateng said. "We have to watch ourselves and turn the corner."

Bayern will be able to count on French winger Franck Ribery, who returns from suspension and is likely to start despite a minor back problem.

Bastian Schweinsteiger should also play after shaking off a knee problem. The Germany midfielder has only recently returned from a broken collarbone.

"If we show what we can do we should take the three points," Schweinsteiger said Thursday.

Wolfsburg has only claimed one point from 14 Bundesliga games in Munich, but welcomes back top scorer Mario Mandzukic from injury. The Croatian is keen to add to his eight goals.

"We needn't be afraid. These days we can beat anyone, even Bayern," Mandzukic said. "I'm fired up for this game."

Poland captain Jakub Blaszczykowski, who scored twice in Dortmund's 5-1 rout of Hamburg, will start again in place of the injured Mario Goetze, who has been ruled out for two months because of a pubic bone injury.

"For Mario and for us it's a big blow," said Dortmund sports director Michael Zorc. "We have to try and compensate for his absence as well as possible."

Schalke also has its injury concerns, with captain Benedikt Hoewedes ruled out for two weeks after breaking his cheekbone in the 3-1 win over Stuttgart.

Spanish striker Raul Gonzalez has been unable to train since Tuesday due to a calf problem.

"Raul is being looked after. We'll have to see how it looks for him on Saturday," Schalke coach Huub Stevens said.

Stuttgart has reinforced its forward line with the signing of Vedad Ibisevic from Hoffenheim, and the Bosnian is likely to start against Moenchengladbach, which hasn't won in Stuttgart since December 1994.

Also Sunday, Mainz hosts Freiburg.

In the rest of Saturday's games, Werder Bremen hosts Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburger SV visits Hertha Berlin, and Augsburg hosts Kaiserslautern in a relegation battle.

Nuremberg gets the weekend's action under way at Hannover on Friday.

Alec Baldwin Says He Found Love After He Gave Up, Would 'Be Heaven' To Have More Kids (omg!)

Alec Baldwin and Hilaria Thomas attend the 10th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation's 'An Enduring Vision' benefit at Cipriani Wall Street, NYC, on October 26, 2011 -- Getty Images

Alec Baldwin would love to expand his family.

While discussing his happiness with girlfriend Hilaria Thomas on "Piers Morgan Tonight" on Wednesday, the British host asked the "30 Rock" star if he'd like to have more children.

"Have I thought about having more kids? Oh sure, that would be great, that would be heaven, that would be fantastic," Alec told Piers, who two months ago welcomed a new daughter to his own British brood.

Alec then went on to make a joke about his own potential plans to have more children later in life. (His daughter Ireland, with ex-wife Kim Basinger, is now 16.)

"As my friend said to me, 'When you have children, typically in a second marriage, when you're older and you get married again to a woman who would have children, you must always remember that you make sure [the children] attend a college where the commencement ceremonies are held in a facility with a wheelchair accessible ramp,'" Alec added tongue-in-cheek.

The actor also addressed dating a younger woman - Hilaria, a yoga instructor, is 27, while he is 53.

Alec revealed he actually sought advice from Tony Bennett, who is married to a much younger woman by several decades, wife Susan Crow.

"I said to Tony, 'I'm dating a woman who is... younger than I am -- she's a lot younger than I am -- and I sometimes think about that and I know, Tony, you're with Susan and you're quite a bit older than her,'" Alec recounted. "And he looked at me and he goes, 'Yeah, people say that to me all the time and I say to them, 'Consider the alternative.'"

The "30 Rock" star said he is "very, very happy" in his relationship and admitted his love actually fit in with an old saying - love will find you when you stop looking.

"It is true what people always say, and it's tough to make your way to that place, I guess, where you stop looking," Alec said. "I was married and I was with somebody for 10 years and then after I got divorced, I dated people and I had one girlfriend for several years... and right before I met Hilaria... I did lay in my bed and say, 'This is it. I'm gonna be alone for the rest of my life, I'm gonna die alone in this apartment in this bed, I'll have my friends, I'll have Twitter, I'll have Words with Friends, I'll have my New Yorker subscription... I'll have my quiet, unhappy life, and then right when I put it all on the shelf, and it was over... I walked into a restaurant... and I met this woman who is probably one of the greatest people I've ever met in my life."

Cyprus police charge ex-ministers in fatal blast

(AP) ? Cyprus police filed criminal charges against two former Cabinet ministers over last year's explosion of seized Iranian munitions that killed 13 people and touched off a political crisis, a senior police official said Tuesday.

The official said the charges against ex-Foreign Affairs Minister Markos Kyprianou and ex-Defense Minister Costas Papacostas include negligence causing death. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. Defendants convicted of that charge can be jailed for up to four years.

State-run CyBC television said the two men also face the more serious charge of manslaughter which carries a maximum life sentence.

Both Kyprianou and Papacostas told CyBC that they deny all charges.

Kyprianou said he believed the decision to prosecute him was politically motivated. "I consider it as an attempt to distract public opinion and to find a scapegoat," he said.

Papacostas said he looks forward to setting the record straight in court.

The

police official said unidentified charges also have been filed against three senior army officers and three fire department officials regarding the deaths.

Kyprianou and Papacostas resigned after the July 11, 2011, blast, which wrecked the island's main power station and triggered weeks of street protests calling for President Dimitris Christofias' resignation.

A public inquiry into the explosion said he was mainly to blame for the events that led to the explosion. Christofias rejected the inquiry's nonbinding findings.

The munitions packed in some 98 containers were confiscated in February 2009 from a Cypriot-flagged ship suspected of transporting it from Iran to Palestinian militants in Gaza through Syria in breach of a United Nations ban on Iranian arms exports.

The containers had been left piled in an open field inside the base, despite warnings from military officials that the munitions could spontaneously ignite as a result of their exposure to the elements.

(AP) ? The race for the best original song Oscar is a slim one with two songs up for the honor, a first for the Academy Awards.

Sergio Mendes' "Real In Rio" from the animated adventure "Rio" will compete with Bret McKenzie's "Man or Muppet" from "The Muppets," despite having songs from a bevy of all-star musicians like Elton John, Mary J. Blige, will.i.am and Pink in contention for nomination.

Charles Bernstein, the former chairman of the Academy Awards' music branch, says he "personally was surprised" that only two songs are up for the honor.

In the past, the number of nominees for best original song has ranged from three to 14. Only up to five songs are eligible for nomination.

"I personally felt that there may have been more than two that I personally would have championed," he said in an interview after the Oscars nominations were announced Tuesday. "But it is a majority vote situation."

This year, 39 songs were eligible for nomination for best original song, including tracks from Brad Paisley, Robbie Williams, The National, Zooey Deschanel, Zac Brown, Chris Cornell and others.

Members of the music branch can rank songs using 10, 9.5, 9, 8.5, 8, 7.5, 7, 6.5 or 6, and a song must have at least an average score of 8.25 to be nominated. If only one song gets that score, it and the song receiving the next highest score will be the two nominees.

Since two songs were nominated, it could mean that voters were unimpressed with this year's contenders.

"Each person is voting on a subjective impression ... so you'd have to go into the head of each individual voter to kind of know what it was that made them feel that any given song was or wasn't award-worthy," Bernstein said.

Bernstein also stressed that the songs "have to be written for the picture, and the judgment of its quality has a great deal to do with how it functions in the movie as well as how well written it is."

Bernstein, who did vote in the category, wouldn't say how many people voted this year, but did say that the rules for each Academy Award are carefully observed each year. He says the music branch will most likely take a closer look at the requirements for best original song after this year's results.

"It's very likely because there were two this year that the rules committee will probably take another look at it next year and make sure it wants to continue the same rules," he said.

Madonna's "Masterpiece," which won the Golden Globe for best original song and is from her directorial effort "W.E.," was not eligible for an Academy Award because "the song does not occur either in the body of the film, or as the first song at the end of the film," Bernstein said.

Mendes, who shares his nomination with Siedah Garrett and Carlinhos Brown, says "Rio" director Carlos Saldanha delivered the good news to him.

"I don't know much about the voting process really. I'm not an expert in that, but I'm so happy about me being nominated," Mendes said Tuesday afternoon. "I don't really know the criteria, but I can only think about celebrating."

Administration nominees awaiting next move by GOP

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senate Republicans are returning to Washington in an angry mood over President Barack Obama's appointments to two key agencies during a year-end break.

More than 70 nominees to judgeships and senior federal agency positions are awaiting the next move from Republicans, who can use Senate rules to block votes on some or all of Obama's picks.

While Republicans return Monday to discuss their next step, recess appointee Richard Cordray is running a new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the National Labor Relations Board ? with three temporary members ? is now at full strength with a Democratic majority.

Obama left more than 70 other nominees in limbo, well aware that Republicans could use Senate rules to block them.

The White House justified the appointments on grounds that Republicans were holding up the nominations to paralyze the two agencies. The consumer protection agency was established under the 2010 Wall Street reform law, which requires the bureau to have a director in order to begin policing financial products such as mortgages, checking accounts, credit cards and payday loans.

The Supreme Court has ruled that the five-member NLRB must have a three-member quorum to issue regulations or decide major cases in union-employer disputes.

Several agencies contacted by The Associated Press, including banking regulators, said they were conducting their normal business despite vacancies at the top. In some cases, nominees are serving in acting capacities.

At full strength, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. has five board members. The regulation of failed banks "is unaffected," said spokesman Andrew Gray. "The three-member board has been able to make decisions without a problem." Cordray's appointment gives it a fourth member.

The Comptroller of the Currency, run by an acting chief, has kept up its regular examinations of banks. The Federal Trade Commission, operating with four board members instead of five, has had no difficulties. "This agency is not a partisan combat agency," said spokesman Peter Kaplan. "Almost all the votes are unanimous and consensus-driven."

Republicans have pledged retaliation for Obama's recess appointments, but haven't indicated what it might be.

"The Senate will need to take action to check and balance President Obama's blatant attempt to circumvent the Senate and the Constitution, a claim of presidential power that the Bush administration refused to make," said Sen. Charles Grassley, an Iowa Republican who is his party's top member on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Grassley wouldn't go further, and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky hasn't tipped his hand after charging that Obama had "arrogantly circumvented the American people." Before the Senate left for its break in December, McConnell blocked Senate approval of more than 60 pending nominees because Obama wouldn't commit to making no recess appointments.

Republicans have to consider whether their actions, especially any decision to block all nominees, might play into Obama's hands.

Obama has adopted an election-year theme of "we can't wait" for Republicans to act on nominations and major proposals like his latest jobs plan. Republicans have to consider how their argument that the president is violating Constitutional checks and balances plays against Obama's stump speeches characterizing them as obstructionists.

Senate historian Donald Ritchie said the minority party has retaliated in the past for recess appointments by holding up specific nominees. "I'm not aware of any situations where no nominations were accepted," he said. The normal practice is for the two party leaders to negotiate which nominations get votes.

During the break, Republicans forced the Senate to convene for usually less than a minute once every few days to argue that there was no recess and that Obama therefore couldn't bypass the Senate's authority to confirm top officials. The administration said this was a sham, and has released a Justice Department opinion backing up the legality of the appointments.

Obama considers the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau a signature achievement of his first term. Republicans have been vehemently opposed to the bureau's setup. They argued the agency needed a bipartisan board instead of a director and should have to justify its budget to Congress instead of drawing its funding from the independent Federal Reserve.

Cordray is expected to get several sharp questions from Republicans when he testifies Tuesday before a House Oversight and Government Reform panel.

The NLRB has been a target of Republicans and business groups. Last year, the agency accused Boeing of illegally retaliating against union workers who had struck its plants in Washington state by opening a new production line at its non-union plant in South Carolina. Boeing denied the charge and the case has since been settled, but Republican anger over it and a string of union-friendly decisions from the board last year hasn't abated.

Finnish presidential election headed for runoff (AP)

HELSINKI ? Finns trudged through thick snow and braved blizzards to vote for a new president on Sunday as polls indicated declining support for the front-runner, making a second round next month increasingly likely.

Ex-finance minister Sauli Niinisto holds a clear lead in a field of eight candidates but surveys indicate he will not capture the required majority to win the first round.

The vote comes as the Nordic country braces for cutbacks amid a European financial crisis that threatens the economy and the top credit rating of the eurozone member.

Finland's 12th president since independence from Russia in 1917 will replace Tarja Halonen, the country's hugely popular first female head of state who has served two six-year terms.

The president has a largely ceremonial role and is not involved in daily politics, but is considered an important shaper of public opinion in the nation of 5.3 million on the fringes of northeastern Europe.

The 63-year-old Niinisto, considered debonair in a country not known for social graces, said that if elected he would have a duty to ensure the government's expected belt-tightening measures will be evenly spread among the population.

The president has a largely ceremonial role and is not involved in daily politics, but is considered an important shaper of public opinion in the small Nordic country.

"We need a president just as some people need kings and queens. Somebody has to be the figurehead," said Laila Halme, a retired graphic artist, as she walked her dog through thick snow to vote in a Helsinki suburb.

Among those challenging Niinisto is Timo Soini, the stocky, plain-talking populist leader who has become the face of Finland's growing doubts about the euro. His Finns party made stunning gains to win 19 percent of votes in parliamentary elections last year, sending shockwaves through Europe with demands that relatively well-off Finland stop supporting bailouts for debt-stricken eurozone members.

Soini and centrist former foreign minister Paavo Vayrynen, who also opposes Finland's membership in the 17-nation eurozone, had been tying for second place, but a recent poll indicates that Pekka Haavisto, a pro-EU Greens candidate has overtaken them.

Halme said she will vote for Haavisto, the 53-year-old former environment minister, who has held several positions in EU and U.N. operations helping to solve crises in Sudan, Darfur and the Middle East.

"He's extremely cultured and civilized. We need a member of a new, educated generation who hasn't been corrupted by politics," she said.

Pirjo Halinen, a 30-year-old nurse, said her vote will go Niinisto, a former vice president in the European Investment Bank who was Finland's finance minister when it joined the euro in 2002, but said she was glad Haavisto might be in a runoff against him on Feb. 5.

"Now, we have two internationally minded candidates in the lead. That sends a message to Europe and the world," Halinen said, echoing the sentiments of many in a nation acutely aware of its image.

An opinion poll published Thursday showed Niinisto still in the lead, but down eight points from a previous survey, to 29 percent support. Haavisto had 12 percent, while Vayrynen, who tied with Haavisto in previous surveys, was given 10 percent support.

Soini had fallen one point to 6 percent, in the survey published by national broadcaster YLE. The poll gave the four other candidates each 2-6 percent. Pollster Taloustutkimus interviewed 1,457 people between Jan. 10 and 18. It had a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

An emotional start as Philbin takes over Dolphins (AP)

DAVIE, Fla. ? New Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin stood at a lectern, swallowed hard and began to talk about his son's recent drowning. His wife and their five surviving children sat to the side with somber expressions reflecting a loss worse than any game.

Moments later everyone was laughing as Philbin joked about his good fortune in becoming a first-time head coach. He and his family are counting on a bright future to ease the pain of the recent past, and his introductory news conference Saturday was part of the healing process.

"All people suffer loss," said Philbin's wife, Diane. "When you lose someone, it's part of life, but you have to be resilient. You have to take the bad things and difficult times and turn them into good, and that's what we will do. And we'll do it with the Miami Dolphin family."

Philbin, the Green Bay Packers' offensive coordinator for the past five years, said he's eager to lead the Dolphins back to the top of the NFL. He noted they haven't been there since 1973, the year of their most recent Super Bowl championship season.

He also did a little math regarding his career. He has been an assistant since 1984 ? 10,061 days, by his count ? and said that gives him sufficient experience to succeed as a head coach.

"I have a lot of faith in what I'm capable of doing," he said. "I've been fortunate to work with a lot of good people. I've been fortunate to be around winning programs, places where we developed players, we developed men, we had good teams. I'm just confident we'll be able to build the same thing here in Miami."

And then, 22 minutes into the news conference, the subject turned to his son's death.

Philbin interviewed with the Dolphins for the first time Jan. 7. The next day, the body of 21-year-old Michael Philbin was recovered from an icy Wisconsin river.

"You're heartbroken. You're devastated. It's hard to comprehend," Philbin said.

He spent a week away from the Packers, drew comfort from a funeral that included 68 family members, then rejoined his team last Sunday for its divisional playoff loss to the New York Giants.

Philbin said he went home that night uncertain whether to remain a candidate for the Dolphins' job ? or whether the position was even still open.

"I had no idea," he said. "The TV hadn't been on in our house for a week."

Philbin then received a pep talk from his 16-year-old son, Tim.

"He said, `You're going to go after the job, aren't you?'" Philbin recalled. "I said, `I don't know what I'm going to do.' I was dejected on a lot of different fronts. He said, `You'd better go after that job. Michael would want you to.'

"That was the start of me getting back and getting moving again."

Philbin met Wednesday for a second interview with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland, who admired the way the coach dealt with the family tragedy.

"You find out what a person is all about in times like that," Ross said. "He's a strong person, a family person. He has a lot to look forward to. I think this opportunity and change of scenery is probably great for him."

Ross said Philbin reminds him of the only coach to lead Miami to a Super Bowl, Hall of Famer Don Shula. Philbin played a significant role in the development of Pro Bowl quarterback Aaron Rodgers and helped the Packers rank in the top 10 in the NFL in yardage each of the past five seasons.

They won the Super Bowl a year ago and went 15-1 this season.

"When I first met Diane Philbin today, she said something I took to heart," Ross said. "She said, `You hired Joe to win, because that's what he's all about.' I think that sums it up."

Not that Philbin was the Dolphins' first choice. Jeff Fisher turned them down a week ago to become coach of the St. Louis Rams.

With a coach finally in place, Ross couldn't resist taking a jab at Fisher.

"We interviewed six people in person," Ross said. "With the exception of one, they were all excited about wanting to lead the Miami Dolphins."

Ross fired Tony Sparano last month with three games to go in his fourth year as coach. The Dolphins finished 6-10, their third consecutive losing season, and haven't won a playoff game since 2000.

Philbin becomes Miami's seventh coach ? including two interim coaches ? in the past eight years. Ross is desperate for some stability, which sounds good to Philbin.

"I'm 50 years old," the coach said. "I anticipate this being the last job I ever take."

When the news conference ended, Philbin posed for photos holding a Dolphins helmet and wearing a smile. Off to the side, his wife thought of their late son and fought back tears.

"Michael's looking down," she said. "And Michael's happy."

(AP) ? Vilified on the campaign trail by Republicans, President Barack Obama will stand before the nation Tuesday night with a State of the Union address designed to reframe the election-year debate on his terms, suggesting a stark contrast with his opponents on the economy and promising fairness and help for hurting families.

Obama is expected to offer new proposals to make college more affordable, to ease the housing crisis still slowing the economy, and to boost American manufacturing, according to people familiar with the speech. He will also promote unfinished parts of his jobs plan, including the extension of a payroll tax cut soon to expire.

In essence, this State of the Union is not so much about the year ahead as the four more years Obama wants after that.

Obama's splash of policy proposals will be less important than what he hopes they all add up to: a narrative of renewed American security. Obama will try to politically position himself as the one leading that fight for the middle class, with an overt call for help from Congress, and an implicit request for a second term from the public.

The timing comes as the nation is split about Obama's overall job performance. More people than not disapprove of his handling of the economy, he is showing real vulnerability among the independent voters who could swing the election, and most Americans think the country is on the wrong track.

So his mission will be to show leadership and ideas on topics that matter to people: jobs, housing, college, retirement security.

The White House sees the speech as a clear chance to outline a vision for re-election, yet carefully, without turning a national tradition into an overt campaign event.

On national security, Obama will defend his foreign policies but is not expected to announce new ones on Iran or any other front. He will ask the nation to reflect with him on a momentous year of change, including the end of the war in Iraq, the killing of al-Qaida terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and the Arab Spring protests of peoples clamoring for freedom.

But it will all be secondary to jobs at home.

In a winter season of politics dominated by his Republican competition, Obama will have a grand stage to himself, in a window between Republican primaries. He will try to use the moment to refocus the debate as he sees it: where the country has come, and where he wants to take it.

In doing so, Obama will come before a divided Congress with a burst of hope because the economy ? by far the most important issue to voters ? is showing life.

The unemployment rate is still at a troubling 8.5 percent, but at its lowest rate in nearly three years. Consumer confidence is up. Obama will use that as a springboard.

The president will try to draw a contrast of economic visions with Republicans, both his antagonists in Congress and the candidates for the Republican presidential nomination.

The foundation of Obama's speech is the one he gave in Kansas last month, when he declared that the middle class was a make-or-break moment and railed against "you're on your own" economics of the Republican Party. His theme then was about a government that ensures people get a fair shot to succeed.

That speech spelled out the values of Obama's election-year agenda. The State of the Union will be the blueprint to back it up.

Despite low expectations for legislation this year, Obama will offer short-term ideas that would require action from Congress. His travel schedule following his speech, to politically important regions, offers clues to the policies he was expected to unveil.

Both Phoenix and Las Vegas have been hard hit by foreclosures. Denver is where Obama outlined ways of helping college students deal with mounting school loan debt. Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Detroit are home to a number of manufacturers. And Michigan was a major beneficiary of the president's decision to provide billions in federal loans to rescue General Motors and Chrysler in 2009.

For now, the main looming to-do item is an extension of a payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits, both due to expire by March. An Obama spokesman called that the "last must-do item of business" on Obama's congressional agenda, but the White House insists the president will make the case for more this year.

If anything, Republicans say Obama has made the chances of cooperation even dimmer just over the last several days. He enraged Republicans by installing a consumer watchdog chief by going around the Senate, which had blocked him, and then rejected a major oil pipeline project the GOP has embraced.

Obama is likely, once again, to offer ways in which a broken Washington must work together. Yet that theme seems but a dream given the gridlock he has been unable to change.

The State of the Union atmosphere offered a bit of comity last year, following the assassination attempt against Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. And yet 2011 was a year of utter dysfunction in Washington, with the partisanship getting so bad that the government nearly defaulted as the world watched in embarrassment.

The address remains an old-fashioned moment of national attention; 43 million people watched it on TV last year. The White House website will offer a live stream of the speech, promising graphics and other bonuses for people who watch it there, plus a panel of administration officials afterward with questions coming in through Twitter and Facebook.

PFT: Eli leaves practice early with illness

Kansas City Chiefs v New York JetsGetty Images

We?ve previously predicted that, once running back LaDainian Tomlinson severs all ties with the Jets, his interview will be more compelling than a Jim Irsay tweet.

But it appears that, instead of one epic sit-down meltdown, L.T. will bleed out the details in a series of engagements and appearances.

Over the weekend, Tomlinson touched on some of the issues during a guest spot on ESPN?s Sunday NFL Countdown.? For the latest episode of Showtime?s Inside the NFL (via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News), L.T. pulls no punches.

As to the relationship between quarterback Mark Sanchez and receiver Santonio Holmes, Tomlinson said, ?It is as bad as I?ve ever been around, honestly.? You know it was at the point where I think the players could no longer do anything about it.? There was nothing that the players could do.? So when it gets to that point there are certain changes that need to happen.? Can it be fixed? . . .? I think absolutely it can be.? But they?re going to have to make some tough decisions.?

The tough decisions may include whether to keep both men on the same team.

?I would really have to sit down with them and see if they can co-exist,? Tomlinson said.? ?I mean that is a decision that I really have to make.? And if I really feel like they can?t, then you have to make a move. . . .? There are some things that obviously [Holmes] needs to work on as far as being a leader.?

Tomlinson previously criticized Holmes for his behavior during a Week 17 loss to the Dolphins.? ?I?ll tell you what, it?s tough for guys to follow a captain that kind of behaves in that manner,? Tomlinson said at the time.? ?When you?re a captain, guys are looking at you, you?ve got to lead by example. You?ve got to play your tail off until the last play.? And when that don?t happen, you have guys looking at you in a way that captains shouldn?t be looked at.?

The Jets owe Holmes $7.75 million in guaranteed salary for 2012.? If he?s on the roster in March 2012, another $7.5 million in base salary becomes guaranteed in 2013.

Tomlinson thinks the front office shouldn?t be surprised by the situation.? ?They created this,? Tomlinson said.? ?This is the type of football team that they wanted.? Mike Tannenbaum [and] Rex Ryan are both brash, in-your-face type of style, say whatever you want, just get it done on the field.? And then it leads to other things [like] guys are calling each other out and saying I?m not getting the ball or whatever it may be.?

The reference to ?not getting the ball? surely means that Holmes didn?t think he was getting enough looks from Sanchez, a dynamic about which we reported during the season.? Near the end of the season, we reported that the Jets would privately consider alternatives to Sanchez.

So it?s unclear whether Holmes will go or Sanchez will go.? For now, the Jets have said that both men will stay.

Of course, that?s the same thing they said about former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

Syria rejects Arab troops, rebels urge UN to step in

Syria rejected on Tuesday a Qatari proposal to deploy Arab troops to halt 10 months of deadly unrest, as army defectors and a tribal leader appealed to the UN Security Council to intervene.

"Syria rejects the statements of officials of Qatar on sending Arab troops to worsen the crisis... and pave the way for foreign intervention," the foreign ministry said.

"The Syrian people refuse any foreign intervention in any name. They will oppose any attempt to undermine the sovereignty of Syria and the integrity of its territory," the ministry said.

"It would be regrettable for Arab blood to flow on Syria's territory to serve known [interests]," a statement added, without elaborating.

In an interview with US television aired at the weekend, Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, said he favored sending Arab troops to Syria to "stop the killing."

The Arab League is due to discuss the crisis in Syria on Saturday and Sunday, and is expected to discuss the future of its widely criticized observer mission in the country.

Moroccan Foreign Minister Saad Eddin Othmani told AFP the meetings would "decide on how to continue the mission and what shape it should take," based on a report to be delivered by the observers' chief.

From its base in Turkey, the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) called on the Arab League to "quickly transfer the case of Syria to the UN Security Council," in a statement signed by its leader Riyadh al-Asaad, a dissident colonel.

The United Nations has pledged to assist the Arab mission deployed in Syria since last month, saying on Monday it would start training the bloc's observers within days.

But the rebels demanded bolder action from the world body, urging it to "act quickly against the regime through Chapter Seven of the UN Charter to maintain peace."

Chapter Seven provides for UN forces to initiate military action, not simply act in self-defense.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon said "the situation in Syria has reached an unacceptable point" and urged the Security Council to respond with "seriousness and gravity and in a coherent manner."

But tough action by the council has been repeatedly blocked by Damascus allies China and Russia, which vetoed a Western draft UN resolution in October that would have condemned the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

Russia, which has accused the West of eyeing Libya-style regime change in Syria, distributed on Monday a new draft that would blames both sides for the crisis and oppose strong UN action, Western diplomats said.

France rejected the latest Russian text, saying it fell "very far from responding to the reality of the situation in Syria," and Britain said a Security Council resolution on Syria was "long overdue."

And US President Barack Obama, during White House talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II, said "we continue to see unacceptable levels of violence inside that country.?

"We will continue to consult very closely with Jordan to create the kind of international pressure and environment that encourage the current Syrian regime to step aside so that a more democratic process and transition can take place inside of Syria."

Syria's warning against the deployment of Arab troops comes amid signs of stronger coordination between military and political opponents of Assad's regime.

The Syrian National Council, a political umbrella group, said it has opened a liaison office and hotline with the armed rebels to follow developments on the ground.

The rebels claim to have gathered some 40,000 fighters under their command since anti-government protests broke out in mid-March. However, independent estimates place the FSA?s troop strength at nearly half that figure or less.

Dissident tribal chief Nawaf al-Bashir warned that the rebels will be forced to intensify their armed struggle if the Security Council fails to act.

"If the Security Council does not take the necessary decisions, then Syria's revolutionaries and the Free Syrian Army will be forced to act for themselves," Bashir said in Istanbul.

In fresh violence on Tuesday, at least 20 civilians were killed, eight of them when a blast hit a minibus in Edleb province in the northwest, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Some 5,400 people have been killed in Syria since the protests erupted in March, the United Nations estimates.

Meanwhile, a senior military official in Israel said his country had serious concerns about what will happen to "huge stockpiles" of chemical and biological weapons if the Assad regime collapses.

Rick Perry Just Won't Take 'no' for an Answer (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Texas Gov. Rick Perry just won't take no for an answer. This time, he's asking a federal judge to order Virginia to include his name on the primary ballot in March. I admire his courage, but I seriously doubt he will still be a candidate when primary day rolls around.

On Sunday, the Associated Press reported that Perry's attorneys filed a motion with the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., asking that the court order his name to be included on Virginia's GOP primary ballot.

A lower state court has already ruled Perry did not meet state law requirements and it would be inappropriate for a federal court to simply overturn that requirement. Only former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul will be on the Republican ballot.

Virginia's rules are pretty restrictive -- everyone knows that. To qualify, a candidate must secure 10,000 signatures, which must include at least 400 signatures from each of the congressional districts in the commonwealth. Perry did not qualify under those requirements, nor did any of the other GOP candidates. Restrictive or not, they are the rules and every candidate knew about them from the onset. Clearly, the Romney and Paul campaigns were able to follow the rules and qualify.

In an ideal world, it would be best if Virginia voters could choose from all of the candidates that are running. But in the real world of politics, March 6 is a long time away. There will two candidates still standing on that date -- and Perry will not be one of them. In fact, after the South Carolina primary on Saturday, the field should be pretty well pared down to Romney and Ron Paul (only because that man isn't going to quit under any circumstances).

Every state gets to determine the qualifications for ballot access. Virginia rules are what they are and Perry failed to comply. For that reason, his name does not belong on the ballot.

Arsenal's slim hopes take hit

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Swansea City v Arsenal - Liberty Stadium

updated 6:02 p.m. ET Jan. 15, 2012

LONDON - Arsenal's hopes of challenging for the English Premier League title took what could be a decisive blow Sunday with a 3-2 loss at newcomer Swansea.

Robin van Persie put the Gunners ahead in the fifth minute with his 18th goal of the season but Swansea outplayed and outpassed what has long been one of England's most attractive teams.

Scott Sinclair converted a 16th-minute penalty kick before Nathan Dyer made it 2-1 to the Swans 12 minutes after halftime. Theo Walcott tied it in the 69th but Arsenal conceded less than a minute later when Danny Graham took advantage of some slack defending.

Arsenal's sixth defeat in 11 road games allowed sixth-place Newcastle to draw even at 36 points with a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers on Leon Best's 37th-minute goal.

Arsenal is four points behind fourth-place Chelsea in the final Champions League berth. Swansea is 10th place, 10 points behind the Gunners but nine clear of the relegation zone.

"It's something we all inherently believe in and we've had success with it," Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers said after his team's first win over Arsenal in 30 years. "The players show great courage to pass the ball. Sometimes we make mistakes but I've got a great belief they can play and pass, even against the best teams."

Defeat in Mark Hughes' first match since replacing Neil Warnock left QPR winless in its last nine league matches and in the relegation zone with 17 points,

Manchester City can restore its three-point advantage over defending champion Manchester United on Monday if it beats Wigan.

MILAN (AP) ? Inter Milan denied AC Milan a chance to take the Serie A lead, winning the city derby 1-0 on Diego Milito's 54th-minute goal.

After Juventus' 1-1 tie with Cagliari, defending champion Milan had the chance to lead by two points. Milan enjoyed several good opportunities in the first half, when Mark Van Bommel struck the crossbar in stoppage time. Inter, which had lost three straight derbies, defended deeply after taking the lead and closed within six points of Juventus, which leads Milan by one point.

Wesley Sneijder entered for Inter in the 76th minute, his first appearance since Nov. 2.

Juventus was held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Cagliari. Mirko Vucinic gave Juventus the lead in the seventh minute but Andrea Cossu tied it two minutes into the second half.

Udinese lost 3-2 at Genoa, leaving it three points back. Damiano Ferronetti headed Udinese into the lead in the 14th minute but second-half goals from Andreas Granqvist, Bosko Jankovic and Rodrigo Palacio handed Genoa victory.

Genoa captain Marco Rossi was ejected in the 75th minute for pulling down Antonio Di Natale, who converted the penalty kick. TV replays showed the Genoa captain had played the ball.

___

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Alexis Sanchez scored the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute, four minutes after Real Betis defender Mario was ejected for his second yellow card, and Barcelona struggled a 4-2 win that kept it five points behind Spanish league leader Real Madrid.

Lionel Messi scored twice for Barcelona, giving him 19 league goals this season and 33 overall.

Ahead of its game at Real Madrid on Wednesday in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals, Barcelona took a 2-0 lead on goals by Xavi in the 10th minute and Messi in the 12th.

At that point, Barcelona had outscored league opponents 41-0 at home this season. But Ruben Castro scored in the 32nd and Roque Santa Cruz tied it in the 52nd. After Sanchez's goal, Messi converted a penalty kick in the 86th.

Diego Simeone made his home debut as Atletico Madrid coach with a 3-0 win over Villarreal as Radamel Falcao scored twice and Diego once.

Elsewhere, Fernando Llorente scored his first goal since returning from injury in Athletic Bilbao's 3-0 home win over Levante, and Racing Santander beat Osasuna 2-0 from a pair of spot kicks by striker Christian Stuani.

___

MARSEILLE, France (AP) ? Lic Remy scored in the 61st and 83rd minutes, and Marseille beat defending champion Lille 2-0. Sixth-place Marseille closed within two points of third-place Lille in the last Champions League berth.

___

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Cleyton's late goal from an overhead kick ensured Panathinaikos won 1-0 at Giannena on to stay within four points of leader Olympiakos in the Greek league.

Cleyton scored in the 85th minute of a match played in below-freezing conditions and which started 45 minutes late because of ice on the field. Panathinaikos has two games in hand on defending champion Olympiakos, which beat Levadiakos 3-1.

Also Sunday, PAOK beat Ergotelis 2-1 to take sole possession of fourth place, Panionios defeated Panaitolikos 1-0, while matches between Atromitos-Aris and Kerkyra-Asteras ended in 0-0 ties.
