How U.S. Soldiers Are Fueling the Endangered Species Trade (Time.com)

Dennis Flaherty

Dennis Flaherty

Endangered snow leopards are found throughout Central Asia, and they've become a popular item for the illegal wildlife trade.

You?re a U.S. soldier, abroad on your first deployment in Afghanistan. Like any world traveler, you want to bring a souvenir back home to the family, something they could never get at home. So you visit the local market on base, where Afghan vendors sell carpets, trinkets and clothing. And you pick out something really cool: a white spotted pelt, perfect for a rug. What could possibly be wrong with that purchase?

As it turns out, quite a lot?at least for endangered species. According to a study from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS)?an environmental non-profit that runs the Bronx Zoo in New York?a significant number of U.S. soldiers deployed?overseas have purchased products made from wildlife. And in many cases, that wildlife is threatened?like the endangered snow leopard of Central Asia, which could have been killed to make that fine white pelt. Most soldiers aren?t knowingly purchasing products made from endangered species, but they are inadvertently supporting that trade, which can have serious consequences for conservation. ?The wildlife trade is highly problematic,? says Heidi Kretser, the coordinator of the WCS North America Programs Livelihood. ?There needs to be awareness raising in the military.?

(PHOTOS:?10 Species Near Extinction)

The WCS research began back in 2007 when staff in Afghanistan noticed products?made from threatened species being sold on military bases near Kabul. That led to a survey of nearly 400 soldiers at Fort Drum in upstate New York, one of the biggest military bases in the U.S., sending some 80,000 troops a year to Iraq and Afghanistan during the height of the conflicts. WCS found that more than 40% of the soldiers surveyed had either purchased wildlife products or had seen a fellow service member buy one. They reported seeing wildlife items for sale one or off bases in 40 countries, with the greatest number by far in Afghanistan?a fact that makes sense, given that the Central Asian country is home to a number of endangered species, including the snow leopard. (The sheer number of U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan played a role in the numbers as well.) ?The most popular items were fur coat and rugs,? says Kretser. ?And there you?re talking about species that do tend to be threatened.?

The problem isn?t just that U.S. service members are buying wildlife products?it?s that their presence in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq helps create a market for poaching and hunting that might otherwise not exist. American soldiers?and even more so, the contractors and other international personnel who follow in their wake?can bring developed world purchasing power to bear in a developing world. Suddenly an Afghan who ?might have no one to sell that snow leopard pelt to?and therefore, no reason to participate in the trade in the first place?suddenly has a ready market with well-off customers. ?You can sell a snow leopard pelt for $1000,? says Kretser. ?That?s far more than the average Afghan person could make in a year.?

(MORE: Virus Hunter)

You can?t blame a poor person for trying to earn that kind of money?which is why it falls to the customers more than anyone else to halt the wildlife trade. There are international and military regulations that prohibit the purchase and transport of products made from endangered wildlife, That?s why Krester and the WCS have been working with the Department of Defense?s Legacy Program on educational courses for personnel who are about to be deployed overseas. The programs underscores the illegality of purchasing endangered wildlife products, as well as the potential health threats that can come with them. (Wildlife?especially primates?are a major source of zoonotic disease, and the international trade can spread those diseases around the world.) The hope is that by educating service members early, they?ll be that much less likely to pick up a wildlife souvenir to take home with them.

And where can you or they go to get help in complete confidence?

Beleive it or not, the fact is that women are not the only victims of domestic violence.

What are the signs of domestic violence against men?

Domestic violence is also known as domestic maltreatment, beating or other spouse or partner violence. It happens most often between people while in an intimate relationship. Soon and in hindsight s/he turns out to be terribly inhibiting and usually terrifying. In the beginning with that person, the abuse might appear as isolated incidents. And that's when the pattern of i'm sorry and assurances to not to do that abusive thing to you ever again.

In a lot of domestic relationships, domestic violence against a man might consist of both persons or partners play-slapping and/or shoving each other around when one or the other gets angry. Typically neither person sees himself or herself as being abused or controlled. Student loans are a ticking 'debt bomb'

It?s a vicious cycle. Many families in this country cannot afford the skyrocketing cost of higher education without student loans. But many graduates cannot find a job and cannot pay off the loans. As a result, they wind up in a much deeper hole (as the interest and collection fees accrue) with no way out.?

Student loan debt in the U.S. now totals more than $1 trillion. That?s more than all the outstanding credit card debt in the country.

A recent report by the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys found that both students and parents are borrowing at record rates.?

College seniors who graduated with student loans in 2010 owed an average of $25,250, up five percent from the previous year. Parents had an average of $34,000 in student loans for their children. The report says the number of these parental loans has jumped 75 percent since 2005-2006.?

?These are enormous numbers,? says Ike Shulman, a bankruptcy attorney in San Jose, Calif.? ?They?re basically setting us up for having a large number of fellow citizens become economically non-functional for the rest of their adult lives.??

Growing numbers of people are being crushed by this debt -- unable to pay and unable to get relief. A recent nationwide survey of bankruptcy attorneys by NACBA found that most (81 percent) had seen a spike in the number of people with student loan debt looking for help. But in most cases, there is nothing a lawyer can do.?

Current law makes it almost impossible to discharge student loan debt through bankruptcy. And unlike other unsecured debt, there is no statute of limitations on student loans. Lenders can pursue borrowers to the grave.?

?It?s not fair and it needs to be corrected,? says NACBA president William Brewer. ?It is a debt bomb that could cripple our society.??

The association?s report says the country faces a serious economic threat from this growing mountain of student debt, one that could be every bit as devastating as the mortgage meltdown.?

?This will be a drag on the economy for the foreseeable future,? warns John Roa, an attorney with the National Consumer Law Center and NACBA?s vice president.?

It?s a problem for students and parents who co-signed loans
Dave Ingham, a disabled Vietnam veteran who lives in Minneapolis, fears he could lose his savings and his house because he co-signed student loans -- now in default -- for his son. Ingham is being sued by collectors.?

His son Shannon has been unable to find work since October 2009. He?s now been diagnosed with acute anxiety disorder and depression. He?s still looking for work, but his father says the loan defaults keep him from getting hired.?

?It seems that whenever he comes close to a job interview, they run a credit check, see his loan defaults and the interview does not proceed,? Ingham said at a recent telephone news conference arranged by NACBA.??

Can something be done?
With student loans backed by the federal government, someone in trouble can try to get the payments deferred or modified. There are even loan forgiveness programs.? With private loans, it?s pay or end up in default.?

The National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys wants a ?safety net? under student loans, just as there is for other consumer lending.?

If you start a business that fails, they point out, you can file for bankruptcy and go on with your life. But college students -- or their parents -- don?t have the same protection.?

?We need to make some common sense reforms, something like creating an escape valve to relieve some of the pressure before the whole thing blows sky high,? says NACBA vice president John Roa. ?There?s no way to diffuse this bomb if the status quo remains the same.??

NACBA wants Congress to roll back the bankruptcy code to 1978, when borrowers who couldn?t pay off their student loans (private or government-guaranteed) could discharge that debt in bankruptcy.?

Rep. Steve Cohen, (D-Tennessee), has introduced a bill, H.R. 2028: Private Student Loan Bankruptcy Fairness Act, which would treat private student loan debt the same as other consumer debt.?

Congressman Cohen says his bill would ?restore fair treatment to Americans in severe financial distress? and give ?an honest but unfortunate debtor a chance for a financial fresh start.??

The bill is supported by the American Association of Community Colleges, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the American Council on Education and the American Federation of Teachers, as well as various consumer groups.?There is currently no formal opposition.

The idea of making it easier to discharge student loan debt via bankruptcy will not sit well with those who backed bankruptcy reforms passed in 2005. Clearly, getting the law changed is a long-shot.?

Dave Ingham says he doesn?t know how to solve the current situation. But he believes something should be done before others face the same financial ruin he does.?

?It?s something that?s really out of control,? Ingham says. ?There are thousands and thousands of us out there who need help with this situation. Please do not give up on us.??

Stocks set to snap three-day winning streak

By msnbc.com news services

U.S. stocks are set to dip Wednesday, indicating the S&P 500 may snap a three-day winning streak after weaker-than-expected euro zone data and ahead of a report on the U.S. housing market.

European shares fell for a second straight session as recession concerns increased after data showed the euro zone's service sector unexpectedly shrank and amid residual worries about Greece despite its success in getting a bailout.

Investors are looking ahead to the National Association of Realtors' January existing home sales at 10 a.m. ET. Economists in a Reuters survey forecast 4.65 million annualized unit total versus 4.61 million in December.

Dell Inc slumped 6.6 percent to $17 in premarket trading after the world's No. 3 personal computer maker forecast revenue below expectations after the close on Tuesday.

Fellow computer maker Hewlett-Packard Co is set to report earnings later Wednesday. The market expects a profit of 87 cents per share, down from $1.36 one year ago.

Other companies due to announce results later in the day include Express Scripts Inc, TJX Cos Inc and Analog Devices Inc.

According to Thomson Reuters data through Tuesday morning, of the 418 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings, 64 percent have topped analysts' expectations.

Wells Fargo & Co is buying an energy lending business from BNP Paribas SA in the U.S. bank's latest acquisition from a European bank seeking to shrink its balance sheet.

PSA Peugeot Citroen SA, Europe's second biggest carmaker, said it is in talks over possible alliances but did not name possible partners. According to media reports, it was in advanced discussions with General Motors Co.

Asian shares eked out modest gains on doubts about Greece and concerns grew about rising oil prices.

On Tuesday the Dow Jones industrial average finished up 15.82 points, or 0.12 percent, at 12,965.69 after briefly breaking 13,000 for the first time since May 2008. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index ended up 0.98 point, or 0.07 percent, at 1,362.21. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 3.21 points, or 0.11 percent, at 2,948.57.

Menopause and Ovarian Cancer Dangers Revealed

Going through menopause is bad enough; the symptoms can be devastating as most women will attest. But if you are taking hormones prescribed by your doctor, are you also worried about ovarian cancer? Perhaps you may want to find out the facts, and take steps to avoid this dreaded affliction that will strike over 22,000 women in the U.S. this year alone. Over 60% of the women diagnosed will die of the disease.

?

Ovarian cancer is a cancer that forms in the ovaries (either one or both) of a woman, and is normally one of two types; either ovarian epithelial carcinoma, which is formed in the cells of the surface of the ovaries, or malignant germ cell tumors that begin in the egg cells. The fact is that ovarian cancer is now the 4th leading cause of death in women, but mainly strikes women over the age of 50 when menopause is either complete or well on it?s way.

Is there a link between the two? This is where the facts get a little murky.

?

Although some research has been done on ovarian cancer, the few studies completed are not conclusive as to whether menopause is involved directly, let alone hormone replacement therapy. In 2006, the National Cancer Institute examined data pertaining to over 23,000 women that had hysterectomies and another 73,000 women that did not, and found that the risk of developing ovarian cancer was significantly higher in women who used hormone therapy than in women who never used such therapy. The main finding was that for women with intact uteri (no hysterectomy) , ?five or more years of sequential use of estrogen plus progestin (progestin for less than 15 days per cycle) was positively associated with ovarian cancer?.

?

Of course there are other factors that can be at work here, such as genetic predisposition, general health, and external factors such as potential for exposure to other chemicals, such as pesticides, and tobacco use.

The bottom line is that if you are considering taking a course of HRT, these numbers may be rather frightening. Can you minimize the risk somehow? Let?s take a look at some alternatives, and how a healthy diet and exercise may be the key to avoiding this risk.

?

Here are some simple steps you can take to help minimize your risks of getting ovarian cancer:

?

Replace the red meat in your diet with soy and fish (low fat)
Eat a minimum of five servings of fresh fruit and vegetables daily
Use herbal remedies instead of pharmaceuticals to ease symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes
Drink at least 4-6 glasses of clean water each day
Exercise moderately for at least 30 minutes a day
See your doctor! Get a pelvic exam yearly, too
Don?t use talcum powder (it has been linked to ovarian cancer)

It is unaffected to mislay picture of what is weighty and get distracted by trivial issues in the heat of a negotiation. Refocusing on your interests and priorities can evade you get the negotiation back by track.

- Expression in support of new and creative conduct to add value. Explore options that have been overlooked. While a negotiation proceeds you discover new to the job in order and gain new insights which may evoke other possible solutions that had not been evident earlier.

- Present to exclude a small recognition, dependent on the additional party manufacture a concession in gain. For example, ?We would ensue eager to achieve X if you could solve Y.? A minor lobby group can impart momentum and lead to additional progress.

- Focus the negotiation on less significant or easier items on your agenda. While you attain accord on a quantity of lesser points you assemble momentum that can have in stock you ahead and make it easier to agree on better issues.

- Vary the dynamics of the negotiation. A vary in players and personalities can jumpstart a stalled negotiation. You might also loose change the pure milieu. Different surroundings can loose change the atmosphere and put you back on footstep to a successful agreement.

- Describe a time made known. Reconsideration your strategy with other members of your team. Give yourself time for your emotions to cool consume. Delightful a break to relax and clear your head can composition wonders.

- Have the same opinion to intrude a unchanging spot of silence. This is not the similar as attractive a time out, where inhabitants exit outdated of the room and forget on the subject of the issues. Everyone stays in the room, exclusive of saying a word used for five otherwise ten transcription. In the course of this calculate each and every one kinds of thoughts creep interested in our minds, causing both sides to moderate their expectations. This strategy is principally practical on behalf of husbands and wives trying to resolve a disagreement, as thriving as others who have a close individual affiliation with the additional party.

- Presume a deadline. Into a lot of negotiations most of the progress is complete in the irrevocable stages, as the deadline approaches. Thoughtfully adding together calculate heaviness might live just the motivation we need to get clothes heartbreaking again.

- Invite your counterpart for his agreement. Now and again it is merely as plain as asking. Qualification he says sure, great! If he says no, pose why not? Listen with judgment to his respond, tackle his concerns, and set forwards the outstanding steps desired to conclude an agreement.

- Make in an unprejudiced third revelry. A good arbitrator can recognize statement bottlenecks and evade the parties overcome them. A third revelry can too avoid both sides to see clothes from further perspectives and bridge the gulf twisted by a lack of trust. Unchanging later than a lawsuit has been filed a mediator can assistance the parties attain an agreement in the popular of cases.

A minute ago ensue sure you are not bluffing when you threaten to totter away, and that you have wherever to totter missing to. Into a few happening, side the negotiation on clear vocabulary ? you may attain yourself dealing with this person or organization again in hope.

Shippensburg company stands beside worker with cancer

By SAMANTHA COSSICK
Staff writer

SHIPPENSBURG ? Employees at Town Cleaners and Cumberland Valley Rental are turning their office pink every Friday in support of a co-worker who is undergoing surgery for breast cancer later this month.
Robin Ray has worked with the company about a year. When she found out she had cancer in both her breasts and a lymphoid, she didn?t plan on telling anyone about it.

?I thought I could do it by myself,? Ray said. ?When I told one person, then everybody just kind of felt so sorry and I just felt so inspired when they said ?I?m going to pray for you.??

Once word got out at work, Sue Colangelo, customer service manager, knew she wanted to do something to support Ray so she planned to get her a pink sweatshirt with the company?s logo and a pink ribbon.

When company officials found out, they decided to purchase sweatshirts for all employees, including a brown one with a pink ribbon for the men, Colangelo said. Every Friday, all employees wear their shirts to support Ray.

?Nobody told her we were doing this. She just stopped dead in her tracks and started to cry,? Colangelo said. ?She thought she was going to have to go through this alone, but we?re a family here.?

Ray described it as ?awesome? when she first noticed the pink sweatshirts and then saw everyone, including the drivers, wearing them to support her. ?I just cried. I was so excited that everybody in the whole place was wearing their sweatshirts in honor of me,? she said. ?They are so sweet and supportive.?

In addition to the sweatshirts, employees have been pulling together to help Ray find support groups, find a health center to help financially since she doesn?t have insurance, and help her with her bills, Colangelo said.

?She didn?t know how she was going to get back and forth from her doctor?s appointments, she?s on such a tight budget,? she said. ?Well, we pulled together and got her gas cards. She was just so touched.?

The group is also working to set up a fund for people to donate to in order to help to Ray with the ongoing medical costs and bills when she has to take off work, she said.

Colangelo said she was motivated to help Ray after losing many family members, including her mother, to different forms of cancer.

?I think everybody is touched by someone with cancer. I just want to do whatever I can with anybody to keep their spirits up,? she said. ?I?m just hoping that this story will inspire other people, especially in the work place, to step up even if it?s nothing else but wearing pink.?

Ray, who is in her 40s, will be going in for a double mastectomy on Feb. 28 and said she is grateful to everyone for their prayers and support. ?I don?t understand why God let?s things happen sometimes, but I know something beautiful is going to come from this,? she said.

20-Feb-12 World View: Eurozone Finance Ministers Set to Approve ...

This morning?s key headlines from GenerationalDynamics.com.

  • North Korea?s new leader threatens South Korea over military exercises
  • Egypt recalls ambassador to Syria over ongoing violence
  • Detention of pro-democracy workers threatens U.S.-Egypt relationship
  • Eurozone finance ministers set to approve Greece bailout on Monday

South Korea?s military announced Sunday that it will hold ?routine? live-fire drills early this week near the Yellow Sea border islands with North Korea. The drills near the five border islands are set for Monday. One of the South Korean islands, Yeonpyeong, was shelled by North Korea in November 2010, killing five South Koreans, and marking the first North Korean attack on South Korean territory since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. The North?s military denounced the planned drills as a ?premeditated military provocation? against the North and vowed to ?promptly make merciless retaliatory strikes? if the South violates its territorial waters during the drills:

?Once the group of traitors starts a reckless military provocation in those waters?and in case just a single column of water is observed in its territorial waters, the (North?s) Korean People?s Army will promptly make merciless retaliatory strikes.

Yonhap (Seoul)

Because of the ongoing violence in Syria, Egypt recalled its ambassador to Syria on Sunday. This comes two days after Egyptians and Syrians protested in front of the Syrian embassy in Cairo, demanding the recall of the ambassador, and a week after the Arab League called to halt diplomatic cooperation with Syria. In response, Syria withdrew its own ambassador to Egypt. Bikya Masr (Cairo) and Gulf News (UAE)

Egypt has set February 26 as the date on which trial will begin for 43 pro-democracy workergs, including 19 Americans, includ Sam LaHood, son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. They?ll be tried on charges of illegally operating and funding foreign nongovernmental organizations in an effort to create unrest in Egypt. A number of U.S. senators and representatives have reacted to the accusations by threatening to cut $1.3 billion in annual U.S. aid to the Egyptian military. Essam El-Erian, a senior member of Egypt?s Muslim Brotherhood, and head of the foreign affairs committee in the People?s Assembly, said that cutting aid would abrogate the U.S. treaty would the Egypt, and would allow Egypt to review its peace treaty with Israel:

?We (Egypt) are a party (to the treaty) and we will be harmed so it is our right to review the matter. The aid was one of the commitments of the parties that signed the peace agreement so if there is a breach from one side it gives the right of review to the parties.?

The 1979 treaty made Egypt the first Arab state to forge peace with Israel and underpinned Washington?s relationship with Cairo during Hosni Mubarak?s 30-year rule, during which the Brotherhood was officially banned. LA Times and Al-Ahram (Cairo)

The meeting is set for Monday at 3 pm, Brussels time. That?s when the Eurogroup ? the eurozone finance ministers ? will meet to decide whether to approve the next ?130 billion bailout of Greece. And after weeks of dithering, finger-pointing and recriminations, it now appears that the desperate politicians in Europe will approve the bailout, even though nobody really believes that it will solve Greece?s problems, or that Greece will implement all the commitments it?s had to make to get the agreement. Each of the leading Greek politicians has signed a letter promising to continue meeting commitments if his party wins the April elections, but just to be sure, the Eurogroup is debating a proposal to turn the screws a little harder: Under the proposal, the bailout money will be placed into a special ?escrow account.? The escrow account would give legal priority to debt and interest payments over paying for government services. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Sch?uble, who has called Greece a ?bottomless pit,? said:

?There is agreement within the Eurogroup that there will be such a special account, or ?escrow account? in jargon, for the disbursement of the second aid package. The account ensures a priority for debt reduction.?

Such a requirement would be an unprecedented intrusion into a sovereign state?s fiscal affairs and could ultimately see Greece force to pay interest on its debt rather than teachers, doctors or other government employees. AP

Rural Iowa needs broadband access to attract, retain businesses ...

When Clickstop was planning its new corporate headquarters and distribution center in Urbana, Chief Executive Officer Tim Guenther did not have to make a pitch for broadband Internet service to USA Communications of Shellsburg.

?We?re really fortunate in that we didn?t have to beg to get what we have out here,? Guenther said.

?USA Communications and Urbana put fiber into this business park. They invested in what?we would have if?we located in Cedar Rapids, and we don?t pay anything other than our monthly bill for service.?

As Iowa?s rural communities look to attract or retain businesses and residents, broadband Internet access has become as important as railroad access was in the 19th century and interstate highway proximity?was in the 20th century.

Broadband Internet access has been historically?defined by the Federal Communications Commission as providing 200 kilobits per second (kbps) of data transmission, roughly four times faster than older dial-up connections.

However, the desire for higher standards was recently acknowledged by the FCC, which now defines ?basic broadband? as 768 kbps, and also defines faster tiers ranging up to 100 megabytes per second.

For Clickstop, parent company of?the US?Cargo Control,?SpaceSavers, EcoFoil and BellyBling online retail stores, broadband Internet access is critical for more than just receiving orders from customers and placing orders with suppliers.

?In 2009, we began migrating from QuickBooks and QuickBooks Enterprise to another platform called NetSuite, which is a cloud-based business software?system,? Guenther said. ?We run our entire business on it.

?All of our accounting, customer fulfillment, customer management, inventory control, Ecommerce stores, shopping cart?and everything we do goes through NetSuite. It provides us with up-to-the-second information.?

Brett Kelty packs a customer's order at Clickstop Inc. in Urbana. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)

Mark Harrison, general manager of USA Communications,?providing fiber access to Clickstop at 202 Blue Creek Dr. was a business decision predicated on the expectation of future revenue.

?We laid fiber from Clickstop to our central office in Urbana, but we also built the infrastructure large enough that we could attact other businesses,? Harrison said. ?If a big warehouse is constructed across the road from Clickstop, they?re going to get fiber-optic?service.

?The demand for broadband service continues to grow. We felt it was important to build the infrastructure to support more businesses because we feel there is great potential for continued growth in Urbana.?

Sheila Navis, executive director of the Rural Iowa Independent Telephone Association, said the state?s more than 100 independent rural telecommunications providers are keenly aware of the demand for?high-speed Internet access.

?Broadband access is part of a critical infrastructure?that must be in place for a?business to consider coming to Iowa or remaining in a rural community,? Navis said. ?It also translates into applications like education, health care and video?conferencing that require bandwidth.

?Every time one of our rural telephone companies adds 10 gigabytes, they have to pay for that increase in?capacity. This is an Internet Protocol-based technology and there are associated costs that many people just don?t realize.?

South Slope Cooperative Communications in North Liberty is spending $60 million to overbuild its entire network with fiber-optic cable to businesses and homes in Amana, Ely, Fairfax, Newhall, North Liberty, Norway, Oxford, Solon, Shueyville, Tiffin, Watkins, Walford, Western, South Cedar Rapids, and parts of Coralville.

South Slope CEO Justyn Miller said the upgrade will allow residents and businesses in communities served by South Slope to enjoy the benefits of broadband Internet service at a reasonable cost.

?We are committed to providing our customers with the best possible service now and in the future,? Miller said. ?Broadband revenue streams are critical under the new FCC rulings.?

The Obama Administration has a goal of extending broadband Internet access to rural communities at a reasonable cost and eliminating?the so-called ?digital divide? with urban areas. On Oct. 27, the FCC voted?to change distribution of the Universal Service Fund, collected each month from telephone subscribers, from helping to provide telephone service to rural communities to assuring broadband Internet access?for rural America.

?The FCC?s?plan will reduce support for rural independent telephone companies across Iowa, while at the same time mandating a basic benchmark rate that companies will need to charge their end users,??Nqvis said. ?The base rate is $10 per month for service, which will increase over the next five years. The FCC is putting more of the financial burden for telecommunications services on the end user.?

Navis said customers may decide to use their cellular phone, rather than continuing to pay?for landline broadband access.?She?said that strategy ignores the fact that cellular phone?calls go to a tower, which is linked to a central?office with?a landline network of?fiber-optic cable.

?Without the central office and the fiber-optic landline cable, there wouldn?t be cellular phone service,? Navis said. ?It doesn?t travel from cell tower to cell tower. There are costs associated with maintaining and upgrading landline networks so?cell phone service is?possible.?

While broadband access is needed to attract and retain?business, Navis said farmers are looking for the same level of service to download daily market price information as well as remote monitoring of heart pacemakers and other telemedical applications.

?Rural families want to be connected with the world,? she said. ?They want to be able to use services like Netflix because many areas are not served by traditional cable TV providers.

?We?re working with the Iowa Economic Development Authority to make sure that they are able to provide quality of life information for businesses considering locating in rural Iowa communities.?Rural families also have an impact on urban businesses by providing?a portion?of their labor pool.?

Navis said the?FCC change in?the way revenue from the Universal Service Fund is distributed has created regulatory uncertainty for rural telephone?companies, many of which are cooperatives dating back over 100 years.

?With that funding uncertainty, I think we?re really at a critical crossroads as it relates to the future of our telecommunications?in rural Iowa,? she said. ?We?re also asking the Iowa Legislature for property tax relief.

?The independent rural telephone companies are not taxed at the commercial property tax level. We are centrally assessed and taxed between 40 percent and 60 percent higher than commercial property.

?That tax system was put in place to allow for other other companies to enter the marketplace when our companies were basically monopolies. Now our competitors have a competitive advantage and the role has been reversed.?

Navis said there?s a telephone company in northwest Iowa where $8 of a $20 monthly bill for service is earmarked for property taxes.

Elusive planet Mercury shines bright in evening sky next week

The planet Mercury is often cited as the most difficult of the five brightest naked-eye planets to see. I've always thought this was a bad rap because there are some times during the year when Mercury is surprisingly easy to see.

Mercury is called an "inferior planet" because its orbit is nearer to the sun than that of the Earth. Since it always appears from our vantage point to be in the same general direction as the sun, relatively few people have set eyes on it. There is even a rumor that the famed scientist Copernicus, living in northern Poland, never saw it.

Yet the planet Mercury is not really that hard to spot in the night sky. You simply must know when and where to look, have a night of good weather, and find a clear western horizon.

And for those living in the Northern Hemisphere, we're about to move into a very fine "window of opportunity" for seeing Mercury in the evening sky. That window, which will open on Feb. 22 and close after March 12, will provide several good opportunities to see this so-called "elusive planet" with your own eyes. The sky map of Mercury with this column shows how it will appear on Feb. 22 alongside the bright planets Venus and Jupiter.

How to see Mercury
First, a tip for reference: Remember that held at arm's length, your fist measures about 10 degrees in width so you can use it to make a reasonable estimate of degrees either horizontally or vertically.

Your first chance at sighting of Mercury will come this Wednesday (Feb. 22). About a half hour after sunset, look about 10 degrees to the left of due west and sitting side by side by side 6 degrees above the horizon will be Mercury and the moon, only about a day past new phase. Scanning that area of the sky with binoculars will aid your search.

As John Glenn, the world's most enduring and endearing spaceman, gets set to celebrate what no other living astronaut has done ? mark the 50th anniversary of his own spaceflight ? he finds himself in overdrive reflecting on what has been an undeniably charmed, golden life.

    4. Constellations go to the dogs ? that's a treat!

Astronomers measure the brightness of objects in the sky in terms of magnitude, with lower magnitude numbers corresponding to brighter objects. Objects with negative magnitude numbers are exceptionally bright. [ Amazing Mercury Photos by NASA Probe ]

Mercury will shine at magnitude -1.2, only a trifle fainter than Sirius (the brightest star in the sky). The planet will be about 5 or 6 degrees to left of the exceedingly thin/hairline crescent moon, which will be a mere 1 percent illuminated. In fact, among the stars and planets, Mercury will rank a respectable fourth brightest, behind Venus, Jupiter and Sirius.

If your sky is clear and there are no tall obstructions to your view (like trees or buildings), you should have no trouble in seeing it as a very bright "star" shining with just a trace of a yellowish-orange tinge. Another way to find it is to draw an imaginary line from Jupiter to Venus and then extend that line down toward the horizon; that line will point in the general direction of Mercury.

Mercury becomes more elusive
In the evenings that follow, Mercury will diminish in brightness ? slowly at first. But the planet will also be arriving at its greatest eastern point, 18 degrees to the east of the sun, on March 5. This is Mercury's best eastern apparition in 2012, although the elongation angle itself is less than the other two.

In mid-twilight, about 45 minutes after sunset from the latitude 40 degrees north, Mercury will be situated far below and to the right of the far-more brilliant Venus and will appear 9 degrees above the horizon, nearly due west. It will set just after twilight ends. [ Video: See Jupiter and Venus in HD ]

By this time, Mercury will have faded in magnitude to -0.3 ? only about half as bright as it appeared on Feb.22, and yet perhaps easier to see as it will appear higher and be set against a somewhat darker sky.

Phases of Mercury
Mercury, like Venus, appears to go through phases like the moon. This week, just when Mercury starts appearing in the western twilight sky, it will be a nearly full disk, which is why it starts out appearing as bright as Sirius.

By the time Mercury arrives at its greatest elongation, it will appear about half-illuminated and the amount of its surface illuminated by the sun will continue to decrease in the days to come. So when it begins to turn back toward the sun's vicinity after March 5, it will fade at a rather rapid pace.

In fact, by the evening of March 12, Mercury's brightness will have dropped to magnitude +1.5; about as bright as the star Castor in Gemini and only one-twelfth as bright as it is now. In telescopes it will appear as a narrowing crescent phase. This, in all likelihood, will be your last view of it, for the combination of its rapid fading and its descent into the brighter sunset glow will finally render Mercury nearly impossible to spot as the tiny orb swings through inferior conjunction with the sun by March 21.

The legend of Mercury
In old Roman legends, Mercury was the swift-footed messenger of the gods. The planet is well named for it is the closest planet to the sun and the swiftest of the sun's family, averaging about 30 miles per second; making its yearly journey in only 88 Earth days.

Interestingly, the time it takes Mercury to rotate once on its axis is 59 days, so that all parts of its surface experience periods of intense heat and extreme cold. Although its mean distance from the sun is only 36 million miles (58 million kilometers), Mercury experiences by far the greatest range of temperatures: nearly 900 degrees Fahrenheit (482 degrees Celsius) on its day side and minus 300 F (minus 184 degrees C) on its night side.

In the pre-Christian era, Mercury actually had two names, since it was not known it could alternately appear on one side of the sun and then the other. The planet was called Mercury when in the evening sky, but was known as Apollo when it appeared in the morning. It is said that Pythagoras, about the fifth century B.C., pointed out that they were one and the same.

A new, beautifully colored lizard discovered in the Peruvian Andes

Friday, February 17, 2012

Germ?n Ch?vez and Diego V?squez from the Centro de Ornitolog?a y Biodiversidad (CORBIDI) in Peru have discovered a new colorful lizard which they named Potamites montanicola, or "mountain dweller". The new species was found in Cordillera de Vilcabamba and Apurimac river valley, the Cusco Region of Peru at altitude ranging from 1,600 to 2,100 meters. Their study was published in the open access journal ZooKeys.

"The new discovery raises some questions", say the authors. This is the only member of the genus known to live at such altitude. It is yet unknown what biological mechanisms help the lizard to survive in this harsh environment, much colder than what it's relatives in the genus prefer. Scientists also believe the lizard may be nocturnal, which raises the question of how it maintains its body temperature during night time. In some cases, individuals were observed swimming in streams, which is rather unusual behavior for the members this genus.

"Further studies are needed to reveal its biology, population structure and conservation status, and outline its overall distribution", Ch?vez concludes.

The Museum of Forgotten Art Supplies - Lines and Colors

  • Comment by Bill Carman

Oh man you did it. I remember. . . You know that Bestine oil can thing was one of my most valuable tools. Cleaned up the wax.

  • Comment by Daryl Boman

Hey! I still use those tech pens but, in a post -modernist style. Great old tools!

  • Comment by David Wilson

Now wait a minute, I?m only 30 and I know what everything is AND I?ve used it all at one time or another. Am I a fuddy-duddy?

There is a lot of craft being lost as these tools go ?out of fashion?. That?s not to say that there aren?t huge benefits and additional capabilities that are inherent in the digital tools we add to the arsenal.

Oh, and don?t forget Ruby Lith transfer sheets.

  • Comment by deb

oh baby, what I used to imagine I would do to be able afford both sets of DrPhMartin colors back in art school?

  • Comment by Pat Friday, February 17, 2012 @ 1:36 pm

I used that same pencil sharpener last night, and much of that other stuff I use fairly often. I love well made things, tools, art supplies, home items.

David, You?re not a fuddy-duddy, unless I am. I?m only 25 and I know all of them. Traditional mediums are so much fun ? I don?t think I will ever fully convert to digital.

    LOL!!

  • Comment by Nanina Friday, February 17, 2012 @ 3:25 pm

    Charley?
Thanks from the bottom of my Best-Test Cement-clogged heart for featuring the Museum of Forgotten Art Supplies! Much appreciated. And thanks to all of you who commented. The Museum seems to hit a nerve in many of us, regardless of age. I had not much in mind when I started it as a little side gallery when I was blogging on Drawger.com. But as it kept gaining speed, I realized that beyond just art supplies, the Museum seems to represent some sort of threshold where technology transformed us all.

Please feel free to drop by the joint as often as you like, day or night? there?s always something new to see!

    Yours Lou-ly,

I?ve used everyone of these. Some of them still. I think all students should learn to do things by ?hand? in case the power goes off when there is a critical deadline :-)

  • Comment by Brian Harrison Friday, February 17, 2012 @ 4:37 pm

Yeh, and Cow Gum, who could forget it !!
Actually, the issue with the traditional media, for me, was quickly
disappearing supplies, and a reduction in quality. I was an airbrush illustrator for some twenty five years, but I had an increasingly difficult time obtaining high quality smooth board, and parts for a range of airbrush. Many suppliers were faced with having to commit to two container loads, which, in New Zealand would be almost impossible to sell !
With initial reluctance, I bought a Mac, plus the relevant software, and have not looked back ? but this post has certainly jogged a few warm memories
    Letraset ? I still have a draw full :)

I am so jealous of Brian ? all that letraset ? I still have the huge 1980?s catalogue with its beautiful spiral bound bright yellow cover (and lots of little asterisk dotted throughout on favourite alphabets) ? but alas no letraset.

That?s funny ? I still use everything shown here except the Letraset and rapidograph nibs, and I still have those! Damn, am I that antiquated?

And, my Dr. Martin bottles (additions to that set shown) still have the price stickers on them ? $1.17 for #14A black from Pearl Paint on Canal Street, and $1.79 for 28b Sepia, from Utrecht. What are they now, around $6 or $7, right?

I still have or have had all but 1 from the pics here.
I still use the ellipse guides every so often, same with the ink pen nibs and the set with the ruling pen.
Had a rapidograph pen used it once didn?t clean it out good enough?
    great memories

I always hated technical pens anyway. You?re missing a haberule to do your type spec. ; )

    Yeh,
I got one of those ! In Fact my steel Type Rule, 5, 6,8,10 and 12 Point size on it is one of my prized possessions, although I used it solely for painting curves with a brush !
Mentioning brushes, the best brushes I always used were Windsor and Newton Series 3a, elegant long fine sables that kept their point until they just wore out ! A sad day when I could no longer buy them !

I went looking in the back of one of my drawers and sure enough ? found a huge package of unopened Letraset alphabets. I still have a lot of those items and use them. But you?ve left off one item ? the hot wax heater. When I was in the business back in the 60?s, we laid down type and images with wax. I still get nostalgic for the ?smell? of it as it represents the newspaper business as it used to be. Fabulous post which I shared on FB
