Parks with outdoor BBQ grills in Toronto are somewhat fleeting in nature, so grab the buns and patties while you can. While there are, indeed, charcoal BBQs for public use at several Toronto parks, a City rep confirms that there is little in the way of municipal efforts towards replacement and/or repair.
When grills are no longer fit for public use, they are simply removed by the park supervisor, which may explain why numbers seem to constantly deplete. In any case, there are a few public parks where you can "get your grill on," as it were, just as long as you bring your own charcoal, equipment, and accessories. But hey, at least you'll definitely make all of those non-steak-eating other park-goers jealous, right?
Here are some of the top parks (for now...) with outdoor BBQ grills in Toronto.
Sunnybrook Park
Sunnybrook Park is arguably the best of all the BBQ-equipped parks, with plenty of grills available along the grounds. The Bayview and Leslie park is a favourite for organized BBQs (which, mind you, require a permit for groups of 25 or more), due to the abundance of still-salvageable grills and picnic tables throughout the park. No awkward lurking to wait for that family to finish its meal! An added bonus, of course, is that's there's lots of open space to toss around a frisbee to work off that burger and soda.
Earl Bales
Your favourite place for novice skiing in the wintertime is also a great place to grill in the summer. Yes, Earl Bales has it all, which is why you might find it a little crowded on Sunday afternoons. Just off of Bathurst south of Sheppard, Earl Bales does have lots of green space to its credit, along with picnic tables, benches, and fixed charcoal grills assembled throughout the grounds. If you can help it, though, try to avoid the bathrooms.
Toronto Island
If you don't mind lugging your coal on the ferry, you'll find more than enough options for grilling on the Island. Centre, Wards, and Hanlan's all offer a mix of open BBQ pits and BBQ stands, with endless choices of where to sit and enjoy your spread. A picnic lunch might be sort of clich? for the Island, but only fools smirk at hot, tasty kebabs. Let the masses eat their pre-packed sandwiches and salads...
Cherry Beach
Cherry Beach epitomizes the greatness that is the summer night with the sounds of faded music, the smell of charcoal barbeques, and the sweet nostalgia of brooding teen angst. Don't mind those star-crossed lovers squabbling in the distance; they'll resolve their troubles soon over a couple of Pepsi's and burgers. Just remember to wait at least 30 minutes after eating before you strip down for skinny-dipping.
Centennial Park
Some may argue that Etobicoke is already awash with plenty of open space and outdoor grills that any additional BBQ action is redundant. To that I say: there is always more room for grilling. You may find various spots for BBQ and seating throughout Centennial Park (or else, bring your own ? just make sure your portable grill adheres to City guidelines). If all else fail (or laziness wins out), you can always just wait for Ribfest.
